I read the story and now I'm more interested in how the Indonesian textile industry made that big ass tarp. 🎪

Indonesia has gone to the dogs. Economy badly affected. If this sentiment cannot be controlled, Indonesia will regress to primitive society.

#StatuePhobia just like ISIS, ridiculous but real. The obvious rising radicalism in Indonesia that's denied by many.

Guan Yu is a deity now? My Chinese history is exceptionally limited, but I thought he was just a general in the three kingdoms period?

To most of normal chinese ppl,Guan Yu isn't deity. He's just a general or a legendary hero.Sometimes buliding his statue for good wishes

That's kind of what I thought, and what my admittedly limited knowledge of Chinese history told me. Weird the NYT called him a deity.

It seems he is indeed a deity for religious chinese.but most chinese r atheists who regard him as a legendary general.such as me.......

In "folk" style religions, major historical figures that rise to legendary status do have some tendency to gain some divine status, I guess.
