Any constituency where non-citizens make up a significant part of the population needs their input to run a functioning democracy.
-
This is not the United Nations, it's the United States. Input is fine (e.g. call, email, etc.), but voting is a privilege for citizens.
-
Voting is how democracy works, if it's a privilege of a fraction of the population it's not democracy. At a local level, this is fine...
-
At a national level, if a significant population isn't able to vote, granting citizenship is the easier obvious solution.
-
If a person wants to become an American, and values free speech, equal rights for all, etc., I say, have at it. Apply & become a citizen!
-
I feel in "liberal democratic" countries citizenship should be far easier to achieve, and if it were easier this might not be important.

This makes no sense. Voting is a privilege of citizenship. Felons can't even vote. I don't get??
-
Arguably, voting is input into the rules that govern you (taxation without representation). If I live in X, pay taxes, then why not?
-
Interesting, I see your point, but I hesitate to agree with allowing undocumented/illegals when we do not allow reformed felons to vote.
-
And I do not mean to imply that undocumented are felons, but they are here illegally regardless of their character.
-
Yeah, I see the problem there. But assuming it's limited to green card holders/residency permit holders, I think there's an argument
-
I can agree with that! Many of my 'visa' friends know more about our politics, and its most interesting to engage them in discussions.

Good. There's no reason long-time green card holders shouldn't participate in the democratic process.
-
They can already contribute to the process. Non-citizens: freedom of speech Permanent green card: donations Citizen: voting rights
-
You're just explaining the current system. Why shouldn't lawful permanent residents who have been here for many years vote?
