I disagree, I find the mathematics of it interesting, informative and kind of beautiful. To imply it's *why* it endures is a bit silly tho.

I find it the same sort of thing as lie-detectors, IQ tests and phrenology - trying to understand humans as if they were machines.

... well, I mean, there's a lot in philosophy to say that we are a kind of machine. It's not an unworthy pursuit. There's truth in maths.

& sometimes analysis is to form an interpretation to provide deeper understanding, it doesn't have to present answers but provide for them.

Agree, but note that no-one is calculating the areas of colour in a Monet. Yes, you could get NYT to publish those results but why?
