A failure of instrumentation on both ships at the same time is highly unlikely. Human error is the probable cause.

I will take a punt and say that they demanded that the cargo ship move because, as the US Navy, they wouldn't.

Stupid comment!

Let's wait to find out

How do you think a US Navy ship failed to get out of the way of a cargo vessel?

Incompetence

why? What happened 2 the hi Tech? Why's the "destroyer" destroyed by a Cargo boat?
-
Because of cargo vessel is much heavier. We call it the "Law of Gross Tonnage".
-
Why is no one seems to get that. Freighter=larger, heavier, less horsepower, less tech, less maneuverability. Destroyer =tech marvel!
-
During my sea-going days, we operated under the assumption that freighters had minimal personnel on the bridge. IDK if that has changed.

This is the part where I love New York Times, when they try to write a reliable story about a Japanese ship
based on maritime traffic.
