Realistically the old speed limit was 70. Its hundreds of miles of empty farm and BLM land.

The roads in Montana and Utah that have 80 mph speed limits are not the autoban. There are hazards. A 80 mph warning is generally good

True that; have driven 70 mph in Fla speed limit-no problem on I75 except for the slow ones; but must get to any destination safe & sound!

No big deal. I just did a road trip to Seattle. Plenty of 80mph roads. A decent modern car (like my '15 Dodge Charger) does fine.

Idaho has 80 MPH through the high elevation canyons. takes a little skill to do the Speed Limit. I am always concerned about a deer or bear

When you make that drive, the "limit" is meaningless and ignored. You just drive. That's a lot of endless country there.
