I am confused. The founding fathers wanted a separation of church and state.

They did not want a repeat of a powerful church that influenced government in America.

Did you mean England where the founding fathers being Puritans were persecuted by the state Church?

if churches want federal money, they can pay some damn taxes.

The mere fact that they are given the benefit of not paying taxes is co-joining church & state. Take deductions like everyone else.

Actually, imposing taxes on the Church would be to unite it deeper with the State. No taxes = greater separation, obviously.

Actually, no. Treating the church differently from everyone else is the state granting special privileges.

I disagree. Ignoring it from taxes is merely leaving it alone. Taxes are an imposition from the State, something that unite us to it.

Handing out special privleges is not leaving them alone, it's giving them a leg up to profit.

The State isn't "handing out" anything, it's simply "withdrawing taking from". Our semantic differences are interesting ;)

Except that all parties (and seemingly every Justice) acknowledges there is no actual Establishment Clause issue here. So no "chipping."
