If parents can't feed their own children, something needs to be done to the parents

What a beautiful oversimplification. New Mexico is in the midst of a poverty crisis and is now the hungriest state in the union.
-
Parents don't deserve to be shamed, either. It's a broken system that allows children to starve in spite of working parents.

Assuming they are negligent is unfair and often untrue. NM is making it harder and harder for people to feed themselves.
-
Free lunch programs exist to take some of the pressure off of poor households, and they keep getting rolled back.

I didn't qualify for free lunch program in NM because my mother worked full time as a school teacher.

No child should be hungry. That shouldn't be a controversial statement.

It's hard to understand how someone could not get that

Free lunches at school don't teach kids food is free. It ensures kids don't go hungry and can concentrate on learning. Big difference.

The EFFING fact this even has to be a law is insane. What kind of country are we that we shame children because they're hungry?!
-
Having grown up in the 60s, just unthinkable & shocking. The second any school employee/admin thought of that, they should have been ousted.
-
You are correct. Sadly it's something done all over the US. It breaks my heart.
-
It IS heartbreaking. This zero-sum attitude is fostered by Trumpism. A real selfish, nasty, mean-spiritedness. Does us no good.

It's not the child's debt. Have the parents come in and clean the cafeteria if work is necessary to offset the debt.
-
See, parents may have to work 4 jobs when employers are allowed to pay starvation wages.
