Are cotton tote bags earth-friendly? Not exactly. An organic cotton tote needs to be used 20,000 times to offset its overall impact of production, according to a 2018 study. That equates to daily use for 54 years.https://nyti.ms/38gEfFz

You have to carry your stuff in something so how does this compare to other methods such as plastic bags etc.

Imagine using 20000 plastic bags instead.

If every solution is yet one more problem people are simply going to give up trying. What's the point?

Don't worry. The government will soon pass laws requiring you to buy and use these bags, anyway. Because facts aren't as important as the politics of hmmm feeling good.

Why is something that is necessary required to be its own offset? Sometimes we just need things. Did you know I can’t brush my teeth enough to offset the cost of toothpaste production?

The more accurate analogy would be to compare the impacts of plastic and, say, bamboo tooth brushes, here homie

Cotton bags don't end up in the ocean. If they do, they break down. That's what matters to me. I have re-used bags for over 15 years already. Will do so for 20 or more years to come. Thousands of plastic bags not in the ocean.

Unless you throw your plastic bags on the ground they don't end up in the ocean either. They end up buried in a landfill.
