While people like to push this narrative it isn't true. Even without shutdowns, customer traffic in person is way down. Because spoiler, people care about their safety and others. Many high earners aren't going out in person; ie I purchase almost exclusively online rn.

I'd take it a step further, tying all requirements to live: health, food, and shelter, to a job is slavery. This is why a robust welfare system would be universal, giving people more bargaining power for their labor and building up instead of hoping to be caught by a safety net.
