They helped build the digital screens we depend on — and now they want to limit their children's exposure to them.https://nyti.ms/2D91nbw

A wariness is turning into a consensus among Silicon Valley parents: The benefits of screens as a learning tool are overblown, and the risks for addiction and stunting development seem high. https://nyti.ms/2EKwL20 pic.twitter.com/wX9QXD1ahL

Some parents have become digital teetotalers when it comes to their kids - no phones, no iPads, no social media, no YouTube videos. Limited Wifi. Nannies are sometimes barred from using their own devices.https://nyti.ms/2ObpAPw

Another occupational hazard for Silicon Valley nannies: the nanny spotter, a self-appointed bystander who posts photos on social media to shame nannies they believe are inattentive. https://nyti.ms/2ObpAPw pic.twitter.com/tt5m5HQObq

Silicon Valley's elite schools are eschewing screens even as devices are praised as essential learning tools in schools serving low-and-middle-income kids. Will that lead to a new digital divide?https://nyti.ms/2PsZXP8

You can't do much of anything on mobile devices aside from watch videos and perpetuate memes. You can't code, most are not great for reading, and you can't articulate complex opinions on them.

Elementary age and younger at these hack-a-tons don't have code that creates anything at the end. They may have fun, but other than an outline on paper and maybe a swag bag they don't leave with much.

That's kind of what I was afraid of, but I grew up coding before there were corporate sponsored "hackathons." We had a basement, doritoes, a couple piles of parts, two working desktops, DSL, a few extra CD-Rs and a lot of time on our hands.

Honestly, their time was probably better spend at home installing Gentoo on an outdated laptop. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:Main_Page …

The best way to learn technology now is using open source software and learning to extrapolate instructions from manuals. Gentoo is one intro that doesn't require much anything but old hardware no one bothers with.

I suppose this is why I've always had the stance that children should not have their own phone, computer, or TV until they are 18 (the computer in living room). And if you must get them a phone, get them one where you control who they call or text.

Clearly developers & creators of big tech don't want their own children to experience the deleterious effects of having our faces in a device each & every day on our brains executive development & function, including emotional processing, decision making & cognitive control.
