Some parents have become digital teetotalers when it comes to their kids - no phones, no iPads, no social media, no YouTube videos. Limited Wifi. Nannies are sometimes barred from using their own devices.https://nyti.ms/2ObpAPw
Another occupational hazard for Silicon Valley nannies: the nanny spotter, a self-appointed bystander who posts photos on social media to shame nannies they believe are inattentive. https://nyti.ms/2ObpAPw pic.twitter.com/tt5m5HQObq
Silicon Valley's elite schools are eschewing screens even as devices are praised as essential learning tools in schools serving low-and-middle-income kids. Will that lead to a new digital divide?https://nyti.ms/2PsZXP8
This has been true for years. As an educator I’ve told my parents this. I heard Bill Gates say this over 10 years ago.
This is a HUGE issue. We raised our daughter with zero computer screens and TV only on weekends. What’s happened is a young girl who can hold a conversation with an adult for more than 15 seconds vs Screen kid. See it all the time. Please back your kids away from the screen!
My children have been brought up with screens...and they are also capable of carrying on convo's with Adults. I think screen time is only part of the problem...more so is parents, who don't actually parent!
Agreed. And good for you for being an outlier. Today, screens equate to pacifiers and it’s the lowest common denominator for parents to soothe their child and the cycle starts. I see two year olds in strollers watching a phone and I’m like — Nnnooooo!!!!
It’s a problem that’s impacting children’s social skills. I see it in the classroom. Attention spans are diminishing, peer interactions are awkward and they have difficulty learning without immediate reward/feedback.
If all your child does is tech all day then I encourage parents to add other activities to their day from a young age—robotics is cool, legos, or creating in other ways to grow their world literally. Diversity fuels the mind. Minecraft is a fav here, but you got to get out

This doesn't seem much different from the hysteria over TV and video games 30 years ago

Blinding Effect On The Eyes
They are no better than tobacco companies. Despicable.
Without false modesty, I pointed to the threat IT poses to our children's (and our own) brains in a book (Mental Penguins - an evocative title, if little else). Of course, the caravan will only gather speed - with the best and the brightest continuing to reap hefty rewards...
Absolute bullshit. Something about a bad workman blaming his tools. And sure what does anyone under the age of 12 need a smartphone or tablet for anyways? Get them a bloody Nokia 3510 so you can see where they are and leave it at that ffs.
