Many Taiwanese are hoping to take control of their identity, and their fate, through the ballot box, despite the threat of attack from China that hangs over such moveshttps://nyti.ms/2EO4o2Z

The threat of China attacking exists regardless of what Taiwanese people do. CCP wants to subjugate Taiwan as a province. No nation provoked CCP to build & arm bases in SCS. Sell TW the best weapons to blunt a massing invasion force. 200 km range cruise mssls full of CBUs

The PRC believes it replaced the Republic of China as the sole legitimate gov’t of China. As such, it doesn’t recognise the ROC gov’t that administers Taiwan. Ironically, despite this, the PRC perceives efforts by Taiwan to remove reference to the ROC as “seeking independence”.

It should be noted, if Taiwan does “declare independence”, it would be proclaiming its freedom from the Republic of China, NOT the People’s Republic of China that rules mainland China. The latter has never administered Taiwan.
