At a Trump rally in Houston, the crowd booed at the mention of the word "globalist" and cheered the word "nationalist," erupting in a boisterous chant of "U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!"https://nyti.ms/2EFwdub

Trump fans acting like the word “nationalist” is just another word for patriotism is like Megyn Kelly acting as though blackface is just another kind of Halloween costume.

Patriotism is defensive, as in defending your country, not undermining everything good about it. Nationalism is just an excuse for them to purge their opponents by any means necessary.

The parallel he is trying to draw with defensive vs bullying comes from George Orwell's "Notes on Nationalism". Specifically this passagepic.twitter.com/w0OH3wyEiY

That's great... But those are personal opinions and personal definitions. That's not a universal truth. You don't get to choose others motivations. I love Orwell, but I'll consider actual definitions, not personal ones.

Reminds me of videos of Hitler stirring up his base; repeated lies from the leader w/ crazed applause & praise from the masses...Never, ever thought we’d see this behavior or have this sort of “leader” in the USA. Patriotism is the love of one's country. Nationalism is the hatred of anyone not from one's country.

Nationalism is a political, social, and economic system characterized by the promotion of the interests of a particular nation, especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining sovereignty (self-governance) over the homeland.

Put in in historical context and you’ll yank the veneer right off of your definition.

No, if one attaches a descriptor, then one changes the definition. Like: heavy water vs. water. If you attach "white" to it, it changes the definition. That's how the language works. Words mean what they mean.

Context and history are important. "Nationalism" as used in the U.S. has a particularly negative connotation.https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/patriotism-vs-nationalism …
