Prince Mohammed stopped in front of cameras to express condolences over a carefully staged handshake with Jamal Khashoggi’s son, Salah. Salah, who has been barred from leaving the kingdom, appeared to have little choice.https://nyti.ms/2D1dQxV

Why are Americans supposed to care about the Saudis killing a Saudi again? And why does this matter more than the dozens of journos who have been murdered in Mexico this year?

No one said it matters more. It just matters. Also, he lived in the United States and has had a platform in politics and journalism for a while, even writing for the Washington Post.

There have been like 50 Mexican journos murdered for covering cartels in Mexico since Trump was elected. They got ZERO coverage. How do you explain one getting wall to wall coverage? What does his job matter as it pertains to life value? WaPo? Mexican newspaper...

*dons IR hat* Saudi Arabia is a key regional partner for US strategic, economic, and diplomatic interests. It's abuses of human rights, dignity, and liberty are also at odds with principles integral to US Democracy. This has also been the case for 50 years.

I don't disagree. But that's been the case since, yanno, forever. There's a lot of bad actors in this world and we're aligned with a bunch of them. So what? Really, what is your alternative?

We've got a lot of leverage over Saudi Arabia right now. We cut off the spare parts, their F-15's are grounded. But I suppose the big point for me is that I'm frustrated. The same folks on the right that booed Saudi Arabia in 2016 are standing by them now for no good reason.

That's not to say that the left doesn't do the same--I'd honestly like to see a more genuine discourse regarding our relationship with Saudi Arabia. It's a needlessly partisan issue. We need them and we don't want to admit it, but we have the power to change terms.
