Today, the International Space Station is the only place where people live away from Earth. It is a technological tour de force and the most expensive thing that humanity has ever built.https://nyti.ms/2CWYnPu

"It is a technological tour de force and the most expensive thing that humanity has ever built." The ISS is indeed a 'tour de force' but it isn't the costliest human creation. That honour goes to the US Interstate Highway System which has cost close to half a trillion dollars.

Or maybe New York City, at another order of magnitude. Or the global economy, which would take a quadrillion dollars to recreate from scratch.

A heck of a lot more, that’s for sure. This is like if someone asked “how many airplanes does one planet need?” in 1903.

How many space stations do we need? Enough to save us from the Republican cult.

I would rephrase the question. What greater value wuold be achieved by placing additional habitable space facilities in near-earth orbit, other than for military supremacy - i.e., Space Force facilities for the assumed garrison of American spacefighters? Hotels, educational?
