Wondered if anyone would bring this up. As someone who used to work in hotel revenue, I must say this is one of many unethical practices of hotel industry. Used to sit around with General Manager day dreaming how we would raise resort fee & laugh how it offered nothing.

"One reason guests are willing to pay them...is that they have become accustomed to airlines imposing surcharges on everything from baggage checking to in-flight food." So dishonest. You can avoid these fees by carrying on luggage or not eating. Hotel resort fees are mandatory!
-
The scam is based on a cynical observation, that most people are indifferent to and/or ignorant of what hotels do after check in. Leisure travelers assume the hotel is honest while business travelers, who often don’t pay the bill themselves, just don’t care. And few complain.

The least they could do is at least a pretend to give you something of equal value for that resort fee. Dining credit, spa credit, internet, etc. Hotels don't even pretend anymore. Now they just transparently admit they're just screwing you out of $40 bucks.
-
That has always been the case. The fee has never provided anything tangible or pretended to offer something “important” (something people would really want)...just in case a gov’t calls them on it and requires such fees to be optional (meaning honest)...

I changed to a different hotel last spring in DC. They wanted to charge a $100 resort fee. I wasn’t there to do anything but sleep. It’s a huge rip. When I was looking in Nashville, it was $30. Again. Changed hotels. But the hotel “price” was misleading.

Las Vegas is bad with this, and the fee you pay depends on how close to the Strip you are.

This is what is wrong with the USA, as compared with EU. How can hidden but compulsory fees like this be legal? Sheer exploitation.
