Even patients with insurance can face financial ruin from illnesses, a Times survey found. "What's staggering here is there’s no way people could know what they would be in for," said a professor at Harvard.https://nyti.ms/2yNEyFT

Four days in ICU with Medicare and excellent supplemental insurance and I'm still left with a very large bill I have no idea how I'll pay down on my Social Security and small retirement checks. My living expenses have gone up 20+ percent this year and we MAY get a small COLA.

Sadly very true. When our daughter was in the NICU we called insurance several times to figure out what we would owe. Even the insurance company wasn’t sure. As if we weren’t stressed enough.

Very happy to now be in the U.K. and under the NHS. It's funny how the GOP freak out when you mention "socialised" medicine. They think you've gone all Leftist Commie.

But you are losing sight of what’s really important: health insurance companies are making many $billions in profits. It’s “The American Way.” And of course the 2% administrative expense of Medicare is just one of those leftist Big Government bureaucratic wastes.

Well I hope you are being sarcastic because what you mention is one of many reasons why this country is doomed unless we collectively change our attitude and habits of allowing the rich to drive this country into the toilet. They will also go down with it

How is it that Canadians-who think BACON!! is the ultimate breakfast/lunch/dinner/aphrodisiac-can cover 100% of their citizens from birth (not conception!) & the bestest nation ever takes better care of pets than neighbours?

To Canadians this is like unfathomable. We have universal healthcare and don't have to worry about flu season because we may all die or lose our house.

The brilliance of the nhs is that it is open to everyone. Each working person pays £1600 per year. 80% of patients are overall happy with the service. No cripplin bill at the end.
