In Opinion Op-Ed contributor Bill McKibben writes, "Threatening to kill or rape someone shouldn’t be banal. It should shock everyone who comes across such a threat. And that should go without saying, except that increasingly it doesn’t."https://nyti.ms/2EyXj69

Founder of Sleeping Giants here. As someone who has been doxxed, harassed and had my children threatened in the last three months, I could not agree more. In a time when anonymity makes it so easy to send death threats and social platforms don’t seem to care, we need more, though

We need laws that protect people online just as they do off and we need penalties for the social platforms that look the other way. There is no barrier to entry right now for anyone who wishes to harass or threaten people online. That must change.

Doesnt Sleeping Giants dox right wing hate speakers and boycott their advertisers? There is nothing to apologize for. These racists deserve worse!

Nvm you guys dont dox anyone 😉, even though you have every right too. Harassing advertisers non-stop for years in order to get them to drop right-wing publications is good enough! I cant wait until opposing political opinions dont have a platform to spread hate!

I think a lot of people have watched as politicians have doubled down on their extreme rhetoric (educators & activists as well) and have decided that retractions and revisions are not accepted by others. OF COURSE we want better discourse! We need it actually, for our survival.

In their frenzy to unseat Trump and the GOP, the media has publicized hatred, violence, and abuse to the point where it has become commonplace.

When civility breaks down all bets are off. We rely on our leaders to set the bar. This includes the press witch should be held to a higher standard than politicians for instance

It should be pointed out that these are just pixels. I take my interactions with a store clerk much more seriously than one online. I acknowledge that there is a real person on the other end, but their pixels aren't and cannot do me physical harm.

The distinction between physical vs non-physical needs to change. Accountability for speech of any form needs to be enforced, regardless of the delivery method or platform

That is an interesting point to make on Speech. However, it would be a terrible reality to live when our digital devices have invaded so much of our lives that it becomes us and our responses, when we take it so seriously.
