It's unnecessary - I think that's the word we're looking for here.

Very unnecessary
-
Instead of using very opposing words like CRUEL or CREATIVE for journalistic expediency let's call it what it is - unnecessary. Lazy headlines like this do not encourage careful thought. It's EITHER/OR - not actually, it's not.

It's cruel and can be harmful to your pet...burning skin, allergic reaction to the dye
-
depends on the dye. most of the time it is just some form of food coloring as that is readily taken up by protein fibers like dog fur.

What I do think is that it’s ridiculous

Isn't this abuse and cruelty?
-
nope. it is interaction with the dog, time spent showing off the dog and harmless food coloring that binds to the proteins in the fibers of their fur which offer cool colors (that the dog can't see) but also scatters the harmful radiation of the sun
-
What is the dog gaining of this idiocy?Interaction means that the dog is doing doggy things with the owner like throwing a ball or go for a nice long walk.
-
the dog is getting attention and interaction. which is all they really care about. and, as in the case of my dog, sunscreen. something to scatter the beta rays of the sun. It doesn't hurt them and to some people it might seem silly, but who cares? I grow tomatoes instead of turf.

It depends. If you own the dog....shows him/her love. Then I think it's OK as the dog doesn't seem to mind.
