Some doctors require a Pap smear before they renew a prescription for birth control pills. They shouldn't, says Dr. Jen Gunter.https://nyti.ms/2yMUjNq

Gynos have been holding my birth control pills hostage ever since I started on birth control, insisting upon doing yearly pap smears even though every 3 years has been recommended for some time. Just another example of what women have to do for basic health care that men do not

Maybe see a Certified Nurse Midwife instead (we can also do Pap smears, if needed, and prescribe birth control)

Hospitals NEVER give the option of Midwives and I have no idea y'all could give prescriptions that's a great option

Yes, most planned parenthood providers are Certified Nurse Midwives or Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners. 😊

I wish she added that women <25 don’t need a Pap smear annually but they *should* be getting chlamydia & gonorrhea screening. W/ rising STD rates and serious potential consequences (e.g. infertility) it is important to remind young women women to get screened every year.

The article was about women who are going to a provider for birth control. Statistical fact: most women getting birth control are having sex. (No, not all...but most)

Here in the Middle East, you can get the pill over the counter without a prescription... it’s a real breath of fresh air after having to pay my doc every 6 months to write a prescription back home...

What a great way to compel women to get a pap smear, punish them with a potential unplanned pregnancy if they don't. Unbelievable.

?? I just answered you. If they don't have the pap, many doctors won't give the woman birth control. So basically, she has to consent to the invasive and painful testing if she wants to avoid pregnancy.

why do you do a Pap smear in your he first place and if not done is the doctor liable. ? That’s my point

Oh ok. No, the doctor wouldn't be liable for anything if a pap wasn't done. And most importantly studies have shown that women should only get them once every 3 years, so basically it's just doctors trying to control women's reproductive rights. When you first get on
