Charlottesville has not fully come to terms with an aspect of its Jim Crow legacy: A school system that segregates students from the time they start, and steers them into separate and unequal tracks.https://nyti.ms/2COZDEk

Oh oh here's a fact. Moved into the school system from new mexico in 2001. Went into a gifted program in 5th grade. I steered myself off that track due to pure lazyness. Could i have done the work? Easily. Did I want to? Nah

As some who went through this school system K-12 it's fair to say that this is a very poorly written article based on an extremely small sample size. You mention nothing of the self inflicted racial divide, nor comment on how many ethnic communities are within the city limits.

There's no mention of how involved families are with the learning and educational development of children. Author didn't go to school with the kids i did. The opportunity was always there for all students, but the effort from all students was not. But yeah, blame CCS.

"Dr. Atkins said that it is unfair to compare black students with white classmates who attended the best preschools and have traveled abroad." I never traveled abroad as a pre schooler and got great test scores. There was someone who qualf'd for free lunch and got into Harvard.

"And in the past year, even the city’s immigrant students who are learning English have outperformed black students on state exams in every subject." And that's the school's fault how?

Not sure of her experience or why she got denied in the gifted program. And its been a minute since i graduated but i remember distinctively choosing higher level courses. The only concern was me doing the work but on terms of intelligence i was more than able.

That being said. I know a guy in the nfl from that school. Many african american students that got into uva a few to ivy league schools. So idk why this article is trying to make it look like the opportunity isn't there. I had friends from many backgrounds and cultures.

HS Advisor to my son: " That career is too expensive, it cost more than a house, it cost about $600.000 can you afford that? My son look at me with almost tears on its eyes and then answer: No. Then she said: "You should go to a community colleague is better for you".
