Google said it would for the first time begin charging phone makers to install Gmail, Google Maps and other top applications for its Android mobile operating system in the EU. The decision comes in response to a European antitrust ruling earlier this year.https://nyti.ms/2COfe6W

Again the EU makes things worse for consumers. This will lead to more crapware preinstalled on phone and more frustrated consumers who buy phones only to find out they don't have YouTube, the App Store etc. There'll be more sideloading of apps, which means more spyware on phones.

Big contrast between the EU and the US here. In the US you have to prove the consumer is suffering to take action, in the EU it's enough to show the competition is disadvantaged. Like the pointless consent and cookie buttons, the EU has not thought the consequences through.

By the way I'm a huge fan of the EU and a passionate remainer, but their policy on the IT giants is just counterproductive, and it's getting annoying. You would think with all the shit that's going on they would do anything to improve online security - this will make it worse.

Good for them. If you're going to be treated like a paid product, might as well get paid for it.

So- it's ok for Apple to provide the apps on their devices but Google can't. Hmm.. Wonder who got paid off on that one. EU is as crooked as Trump.
