This article is a foreshadowing of how climate change will further exacerbate the chasm between the haves and have nots. How many will be able to afford the necessities to survive the extreme weather, food shortages, health threats, etc.?

Okay, but really they need to stop building on the beach. Insurance companies pay for them to rebuild, then raise all our rates.

True but is that really the homeowner's fault? It's literally the purpose of insurance. And insurers aren't hurting. They don't *need* to raise your rates, they do because they don't want to hurt their margin. It's a scam.

These should be standard in frequent extreme weather zones, no matter the cost. Peoples lives and well being is more important than total state profit!

There's a house in my town with a front door like a bank safe, bullet proof windows, etc. Built to withstand nuclear attack. Apparently that's a thing. There's specialty home builders who build fortified housing.

It's not on the coast, but yeah, stilts. When they rebuilt those houses up in Jersey they made the first level the garage/utility room level so that if it floods again the actual house is high and dry.

Impressive! The neighbor’s house directly behind it is only there because it was in the shadow of this amazing house. Good job!

Stilts absolutely help, Misha, but won’t save a house, as evidenced by all the snapped off stilts in many other yards there. I live in a coastal zone. We’ve seen firsthand the entire construction must be keyed to wind and wave effects.

Let's hope for them that the rest of the city gets rebuild. Otherwise standing there alone wouldn't be so great.
