"The exhibition is fundamentally about resistance, and black sovereignty. It’s about change, not chains," writes critic Holland Cotter of the "Afro-Atlantic Histories" exhibit in São Paulo. It comes at a politically fraught moment for Brazil.https://nyti.ms/2yG0tyE

Great article on an exhibition I'd have loved to have seen @maspmuseu, in São Paulo, Brazil. Here's my interpretation, made earlier in 2018, from the painting of Don Miguel de Castro, Emissary of Kongo, circa 1643, I believe the original artist is unknown. Been to MASP before.pic.twitter.com/aSoJiDthZm

Here's Sandra Russell's coloured pencil on brown paper interpretation, made earlier in 2018, from the painting of Don Miguel de Castro, Emissary of Kongo, circa 1643, I believe the original artist is unknown. He wears a black hat with a red feather, white starched collar, with a white and black pencils positioned to the right of the drawing. The drawing was created in 2018 inspired by #PortraitChallenge on Twitter.
