A single mother in Florida decided not to evacuate for Hurricane Michael after her employer told her that if she left, she would not be paid. She's just one of the readers who described the financial hardships of evacuating.https://nyti.ms/2CIukuK

Happens ALL. THE. TIME. During Harvey my son was at work and I called to let him know things were bad and he probably needed to leave. It was an hour early. His employer said he would be fired. He ended up not being able to get home for three days

Many of these states have such little protection for workers.

Especially Florida. They are heavily anti union and anti worker. It's all about the company and the profit margins, not the ones who make the company.

Will voters affected by Hurricane Michael channel their direct experience into supporting political leaders willing to make tough choices such as combating climate change rather than ignoring it?

It should be ILLEGAL to employers to threaten firing when any state of weather emergency has been declared. Seeking to comply during an Atlanta ice storm sent me into a ditch after being told by employer we were required to get to work - and this was a state agency.

How the working poor are trapped and abused by those in power. Employers should be at least fined for threatening and discriminating. Not to mention being crappy human beings

The first time an employer is charged with first degree murder if an employee dies because they didn't evacuate so they could keep their job, this will stop. Unfortunately, we'll never charge employers for this because we can't do anything to the precious "job creators".

The employer didn’t say she would be fired, she would not get paid. This story doesn’t provide enough information and is designed to just get cliccks and views. I am starting to think the New York Times is not as thorough as I thought.

The @nytimes headline doesn't say anything about being fired. What exactly is the problem? The paper is reporting what the woman said. #FactsMatter

We need unions to protect workers rights. Businesses only care about making a profit. Employees are just replaceable resources.
