I've seen this first hand as a therapist when I worked in long term care. I no longer work in LTC. Just know its not the PT/OT/STs recommending the therapy. Its management of these places dictating so much therapy be provided. Its a money grab, not in patient's best interest.

This article fails to mention a primary reason families choose skilled care over hospice, even if they want a focus on comfort. When a person is seriously ill (dying), room and board charges are covered at a nursing facility with rehabilitation, but not with hospice.

We will all die eventually. What is wrong with giving them care, hope and some stimulation/enjoyment in their final days? If they are not worthy of care, do you feel we should just euthanize?!

The truth is that they are not getting a damn thing. The nursing homes are billing them fraudulently. Nursing homes need more surprise visits from the Joint Commission and they need to be closed down for NOT HELPING THESE PEOPLE. Sometimes they literally starve or dehydrate.

As #babyboomers get older & more families separate, this $ will skyrocket. Care centers charge up to $7,000.00 a month for a shared room, no protection or privacy, or ins to protect personal belongings.

A person who is dying in a nursing home is not up to, nor does s/he want therapies that will supposedly "rehab" them. Nursing homes are places who overcharge and underemploy; most make their residents' lives hell. Just like most in the "healtcare" field, they are in it for $$.

Isn’t this practice just adding to the rising health care costs? Isn’t that why there is hospice? It seems to me this just is another money making scheme and it will be Wrapped in a cloak of cultural warfare when someone tries to address the issue.

60 Minutes did a report almost 10 years ago about the cost of dying. Then it $50B spent in Meidcare in the last 2 months of life, with 20-30% of that treatment found to have zero impact.
