We analyzed aerial images of Mexico Beach and found that half of the buildings along a one-mile stretch were completely destroyed. Witnesses said they saw the wind lift homes into the air.https://nyti.ms/2CER3bb

Ill never understand why Americans build paper houses and then complain when they fly away all the time ... Might move to the US and and start a company that builds “European” houses, where you can’t puncture the walls with a toothpick ..

It would be really useful for people everywhere if you were to analyze the construction methods of the buildings left intact vs. the buildings that were destroyed.

@snarton They have done that & will continue to do that. Lots of efforts are dedicated to understanding building Hurricane safe homes. The simple fact is: most of the homes in Mexico Beach were built long before current FL Hurricane codes. (50s/60s). Houses still standing are...

I feel bad for the local residents, the ones who have a 2nd or 3rd home right on the beach, not as much. You can't put a wooden structure on a beach where hurricanes happen and not expect eventual destruction.

Not really: a lot of these folks had no flood insurance or home insurance period. So many of these structures were paid for: no mortgage frequently means no insurance.

Well obviously if there is no insurance there won’t be an argument over insurance. If you look at Realtor app you will see Mexico City had 500k plus new condos which I bet had mortgages and which had insurance....and arguments will ensue
