        John Kerry in 2015 announced the United States will send an additional $9 million in relief to Nepal after the country was devastated by an earthquake outside the capital of Kathmandu. This addition brings the total amount of US disaster assistance to Nepal to $10 million.

        The five recent presidents are not the first to devote part of their retirement to humanitarian causes. Herbert Hoover won acclaim for leading global relief efforts after World War II. Early in his career Hoover helped prevent starvation in Europe during World War I.
