Fact check: President Trump rejected the official estimate from the government of Puerto Rico that nearly 3,000 people died from Hurricane Maria through a series of misleading or false claimshttps://nyti.ms/2NfSwuc

In his tweets, President Trump cited an outdated tally that officials had acknowledged almost immediately was too low and misleadingly suggested that doubt over the tally did not emerge until “a long time later”http://nyti.ms/2NfSwuc

The 3,000 person figure that’s been used as Puerto Rico’s death toll comes from an estimate in a study by independent researchers at George Washington University and was commissioned by the government of Puerto Ricohttp://nyti.ms/2NfSwuc

Researchers found government data documented 16,608 deaths from September 2017 to February 2018 — 2,975 more deaths than under predicted mortality rates. In other words, they explicitly tried to avoid counting people who “died for any reason, like old age”http://nyti.ms/2NfSwuc

hey, remember that unsubstantiated claim that @nytimes made that there was someone in the WH who was actively working in opposition to a duly elected official? -Or what about that time when @nytimes tried to point out racism but expected us to forget they hired a open racist?

You know full well that this isn't how hurricane deaths are normally calculated. Large numbers of those deaths were from accidents and other causes, but you don't care. Your hatred of Trump has caused your credibility to be on the level of the National Enquirer.

#Puerto Rico death toll to be totally transparent show us the number with timeline (date) during the hurricane and immediately after the hurricane. Any death two or more months afterward can't be hurricane related.

Trump can't refute the death recorded he is questioning the cause of death. You can look at autopsy reports to prove him right or wrong. Science is that simple.

Why would they need data into February 2018 to determine this? I can see maybe into October but there’s no basis to be looking all the way to February

Following the Harvard study, the government in Puerto Rico released additional data showing there were at least 1,400 additional deaths on the island in the months after the hurricane. But the government didn’t explain how many were attributed to the hurricane.

Questioning the veracity of "government data" is what the NYT should be doing, instead of treating it as fact when it appears mysteriously to be used as political attacks.
