A new store in New York doesn't have cashiers or a self-checkout. Instead, it runs on the honor system and you pay with... a text?https://nyti.ms/2N91kSO

I'll give it a month when the owners will be sadder, wiser people.

What they're betting on is that as yet unknown number of customers will dishonor the honor system, but the savings of not providing jobs for the lower-middle-class will outweigh the losses experienced in theft.

This is always part of the calculation. Nothing new here. But what postive constructive thing does this store offer?

No idea, as I don't view it as a positive, only as eventually inevitable. (I still refuse to use self check out ... preferring that cashiers and clerks continue to have jobs. Nevertheless, in the near future, job elimination is where it's headed.)

Consumers want lower prices. It could be considered a failure of our grossly selfish and materialistic country. Many Americans want what they want regardless of the impact on people, community, and environment. See #Trump supporter for example. #Greed unleashed.

I'm skeptical that cost savings will be passed on to the consumer.

People rob stores when they have to pay - i've literally witnessed personally people robbing on the upper east side. Love the concept - but they should try amazons approach where it just bills you and charges as you leave rather than not at all.

This is not only stupid but it is irresponsible. Removing the human factors in everyday life is weakening our society.

The owners of the store are in dreamland if they don't think the store will be picked clean. Sure there are many honest people but criminals will take advantage of the"honor system" and steal everything not nailed down . I give it a month before they realize this is insane in NYC
