A 9-year-old schoolgirl's refusal to stand for the singing of the national anthem has stirred a nationwide debate in Australia. She said she would continue to protest the song she said was racist even if it meant being kicked out of school.https://nyti.ms/2NcY5cQ

I sang “Advance Australia Fair” long before this child’s parents were born, & never once did it cross my mind that “fair” means “white”. When the poem was penned “fair” meant beautiful (not white), & it matches the Australian value of giving everyone “a fair go”. Fair means fair.

It’s the “young” that was objected to as it refers to a young country and so implies those there before 1770 are not considered.

In the interview the girl objects to the word “fair”. Yes the country of “Australia” is young, but the land & its indigenous culture are old. When this poem was written there is no doubt that indigenous people were not thought of as “Australians”. Thankfully, that has changed.

Are you away of the “Welcome to Country & acknowledgement of the traditional custodians of the land” that is given at virtually every public gathering in Australia? That acknowledgment is rightly given and the anthem is rightly sung. The anthem is for everyone now.

Nine year old, its all parents telling her to do this. No nine year old thinks about things like this. Or even understands it. This is all parents coaching.

I just want to say that at 7 years old I found that racist second verse of our own Anthem in a book in my schools library and took it to my mom questioning it and told her I didnt want to sing the song anymore. Kids are more inquisitive if you allow them free thinking.

As a boy, I was struck by the cruelty and ignorance of the racist backlash during the Boston desegregation riots in the 70s. But my parents were, well, openly racist. Perhaps, she has her own mind?pic.twitter.com/NeyMbAJ5cO

I don’t mind spending a small amount of time sharing something rational with an irrational person. It may aid them in making better decisions down the road.

When I was that age, I too didn’t want to stand for the US pledge. I firmly did not believe in it, still protest it till this day. Parents had nothing to do with it. I had the internet which helped me educate myself to form my own opinions, this girl too. She’s bright asf.

Do you really believe that lie? That’s not true. When I was growing up, we were taught how to distinguish fact from fiction. Research skills, knowing the diff from a bogus publication and scholarly articles is damn easy. Kids nowadays are brilliant with that.

Actually the data on that doesn't back you up at all. Not only are kids but adults as well are easily duped buy online BS. Isn't that what liberals have been complaining the Russians did in the last election. Interesting how everybody on the left wants to have it both ways
