The financial crisis didn’t just kill the dream of getting rich from your day job. It also put an end to a fundamental belief of the middle class: that owning a home was always a good idea.https://nyti.ms/2NaulNK

Owning a house was always a good idea. Selling at the wrong time on a perceived value panic wasn't.

Typical central planning screw-up: "...it was government policy for these poor quality loans to be made. Since the early1990s, the government has been attempting to expand home ownership in full disregard of the prudent lending principles..."https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-government-caused-the-mortgage-crisis-2009-10 …

The government didn’t force greedy realtors, mortgage brokers, and appraisers to push families into buying homes out of their price range by not telling the whole truth about adjustable rate mortgages and ballon payments.

No, they didn't. But they provided the mandate and the means and all but FORCED the lending (if you understand fractional reserve banking) - at that point, you can be darn sure that scammers would move in and take advantage. The gov't set the table for scammers to feast.

The mandate to help people buy homes was good and needed. The greed that followed was typical American lack of morals and character when pursuing wealth.

The gov't forced banks to make loans that they wouldn't have made otherwise. THAT more than anything else is what precipitated the subprime crisis. Yes, predatory lenders stepped in and grabbed their share - but it would have happened with or without them, due to gov't policy.
