One of our readers asked Viola Davis if she ever passed on a role and regretted it. "Almost a better question is, have I ever done roles that I’ve regretted? I have, and 'The Help' is on that list."https://nyti.ms/2N7eqQb

Word to the white gals who told me I “had to read” The Help, and especially to the gal who *gave* *me* her copy to borrow. I knew what the story would be, read that mess anyway, and told her it was mess. And that is why we are no longer friends. Do not @me.

You're not friends with someone because they *liked a book*? That is the most petty thing I have ever heard. I'm friends with people who like Twilight for crying out loud. I'm an atheist and hate the Republican Party and I have friends who are religious or Republican. Come ON.

I think you missed a big point. It's not about liking a book or not liking it. It's about liking a book with a shitty message. It's a cringey, white savior story. Not seeing the racism in that is the problem.

You should've seen her in Law and Order: Criminal Intent. She would've made a huge impression then.

You clearly didn't see her in Doubt (2008). She should have won an Oscar. Do yourself a favor and watch it. She was awesome in Fences. So, no The Help didn't make her. She still a right to criticize.

All part of the current movement Im sure. She had no problems with the role throughout the entire process and suddenly she regrets it. How can she even say that, just shows what kind of person she is.

So someone's opinion can't change in 7 years? Yikes, no wonder most people are afraid of change and growth.

I actually read the article and she had a perfectly logical rationale! I wasn't sure where she was going with that comment. But you know not many people will actually read the article so this tweet will mislead them and they'll say unnecessarily negative things about Ms. Davis.

If you want the story to be from the maid's perspective - then somebody needs to write that one. It's not what The Help is or pretends to be.

So you honestly believe that the reason there aren’t more movies from black female perspectives is just no one is willing to tell them?

Nope. I think systemic racism and misogyny prevent a lot of stories from reaching a national audience. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth writing and fighting for. After all, Hidden Figures did very well. The book was written by Margot Lee Shutterly.
