The confrontation between Serena Williams and the chair umpire started with a warning for breaking a rule that many fans only barely understandhttps://nyti.ms/2CJIU6l

About what? The inconsistency of umpires? Happens in every sport. Bottom line is that there are rules. If they aren't always enforced, it doesn't mean you blame the umpire who does abide by them. She knows how warnings accumulate. This was on Serena and disrespectful to Osaka.

So (1) the coach screwed up (2) the umpire is a stickler and he enforced the rules properly (3) Serena acted like a spoiled tennis brat (4) she called him a thief (5) made the match about her (6) the opponent won (7) diminished the victory for her opponent (8) blemished the sport

Serena got her ass whoop’d and is looking for an excuse. Look at the sets. It wasn’t close. Congrats to the real winner. She earned it.

What coaching? This was a grand slam final, players should rely on themselves. Much as I am a Serena fan, her behavior was appalling

I’d have thought the rule “No Coaching” would contain quite an obvious meaning inherent. Or the rules no apply to Sereno kween ?

... a rule that was violated repeatedly by nearly every coach in the tournament and ignored by umpires until this moron selectively enforced it during the women’s final. He targeted Serena. She was right to be angry. I wish she handled it better. Screw the #USTA

He enforced the rules, he didn't write them. Save your criticism for those that DON'T enforce, not those that do. Otherwise, what's the point in having any regulations? She can be angry. It doesn't mean she's right (& how does being a mother change the situation?). She was wrong

Sports is about rules. It's not about gender, race, etc. Just rules, to guarantee a fair competition betw. players. If you allow coaching: Fine! However, in that moment it was a rule of the game, well known to the players. How should kids learn fairness when we diffuse the rules?

It was a warning indeed. Its in the rules. The umpire did NOT give a point penalty. But this got into Serena's head. She broke 3 rackets then blames the previous coaching warning. Still demanding an apology, saying umpire is a thief and will not play in her court again
