There is not much incentive to specialize in addiction medicine and almost no substantial education available for medical students. Yet addictions to tobacco, alcohol and drugs led to 632,000 deaths a year.https://nyti.ms/2N0ePE0

My late dad who was a doctor believed we needed to legalize ALL drugs, regulate, purify, & fund the rehab from the sales. At this point the failed drug war has claimed lives, imprisoned millions, & we are no closer to stoping it. Regulate and provide SAFE medical quality doses.

This is sad. We need to start treating addiction like the disease that it is. If we don’t, it’s just going to keep happening.

Doctors give patients pain meds for legitimate pain. The bottle says 1 every 6 hours and patients take them every 6 hours need or not. Drink wine or beer as usual. Allergy meds and sleeping pills same time. Patients not chemists. Clear instructions would help.

Even if you lack the sympathetic view that addicition is not a crime, you could surely agree that addicts in jail is a needless burden on the tax payer. Turn the jailing expense into a medical one, and you gain a functioning and contributing member of society.

that's not the discussion. In America it's treat white drug addicts while jailing black crack (and weed) users. Equality treatment under the law demands white offenders get the same sentencing.

Truth be told, most doctors educated in the US are not well equipped to treat anything beyond their specialization. Medical education here is too narrow, technical, and practice is driven more by profit than by care. This combo has its positive sides, but also many negatives.

And I am going to be forced to deal with this! I asked my doctor what to do! All he said is that the State will cut me off my pain meds with no regard to what will happen to me! I am not a drug addict but I am addicted. I'm 20 years on opiates & responsible!
