It would be a marvel if, in our times, Germany was able to somehow avoid right-wing populism. But at least Germans have an innate aversion to loud-mouthed, gradiose narcissists. Unlike other countries we all could name. @realDonaldTrump @BorisJohnson

We have Horst Seehofer as Interior Minister, that's bad enough- he IS narcisstic and loudmouthed. It's complicated to explain why Angela Merkel gave him this ressort, but it's kind like: Keep your friends close, but your enemy closer. (Seehofer is not a friend of Angela Merkel).

But my sense is that the Germans would never vote for Seehofer to be Chancellor, would they?

I think the majority of the Germans won't vote for him as a Chancellor (he wouldn't even be nominated by CDU/CSU- he destroyed to much chinaware with his solo-runs). Until now no bavarian CSU-Member could get Chancellor (and that is good that way).

"...On Saturday, an article in the German newspaper Die Zeit posed the question, “Is Germany threatening another 1933?”..." Yes, that's right, but the answer in Die Zeit (written by professor Wildt) was infact no - if you read the article. But the text in NYT does not tell that!

We have tried to cope with our horrible past and now we are facing new challenges but most people oppose the AFD. Thank you for this very interesting and true article. It shows how well the author knows Germany.

As a German I don't think right wing radicalism is just a German problem nowadays. Anti-semitism (openly) you find in Britain, America, even in Sweden. In the USA more radical, directly. East Germans have been living under dictatorships for 4 generations (Kaiser, Hitler, Sowjets)pic.twitter.com/y6ODo98KRy

If the premise that all men are created equal is valid then we must stop complaining and whining about past events because they inevitably create new resentments. The difference is not the different character of different populations but the way in which they govern themselves.pic.twitter.com/OTDfNHuGSd
