How does it also not trap 🎏? Also garbage patch over 2000 miles wide, you would need thousands of these to make any difference. A for intent, C- for execution.

Sorry I can't afford to subscribe to a paper right now and therefore, it seems like the only time I hear about great things being done (or not) is when there's a special on TV. Why isn't the daily & increasing threat of climate change not front & center in all of our Media?

What good is it to save money when there is such a price, we all suffer from the consequences?!? pic.twitter.com/ZNYj19T4gW

150,000 pounds of plastic is the equivalent of around 1.2m plastic bottles. Apparently we throw away 1m plastic bottles a minute - wonder how many reach the ocean?

Apparently 8m tonnes of plastic makes it into the oceans every year so removing 1.2m tonnes per year with one machine is a fantastic effort. There is however the issue of of the existing 240m tonnes of surface plastic to also manage. More machines!

Can someone please help explain how all that plastic and other trash makes it into the ocean in the first place? Shouldn’t that be the focus to help avoid the problem? I keep hearing about all this trash at the bottom of the ocean, just don’t understand why or how. Landfills?

Even if we stop people throwing waste in the oceans there is still the issue of what is currently in the oceans. That is what this boom is designed to do.

Understand, trying to figure out how this came to be and how to fix the problem “upstream”. Is trash being dumped in the Ocean? In the US?

I can't answer for the US but in the UK people freely throw and dump rubbish on large scales. Fly tipping is a big problem with the invention of Facebook rubbish collections.. The problem is people aren't educated and sometimes just don't care.

Ok I hear you. It just doesn’t feel like it can reach this scale with people throwing things here and there. The scale almost implies large industrial and deliberate actions but I’m not hearing anyone call out anything like that. then may it’s centuries of build up. don’t know.

I recommend the documentary A Plastic Ocean for some more insight into this topic. Plastic doesn’t break down it just breaks up into smaller pieces and relatively little is actually recycled. It’s an insidious problem that can be helped by not buying single use plastic products.

Ok thanks. hard to get behind environmental issues when cause/effect is less obvious. And extreme positions or declarations on either side of an issue never help. Plastic has many helpful uses and the focus should be on recycling AND how to avoid for trash to get to the ocean.
