Here in #Dartmouth #NovaScotia federal rep .@DarrenFisherNS, the 'mayor' @MikeSavageHFX, a councillor @TonyMancini_NS and a provincial rep @ChenderMLA, got together to brand a library in low income area w/bank logos, corporate colors; the grossest most uncivil kind of corruptionpic.twitter.com/juXBZJE4CU

All this, in a province that unilaterally dissolved its cities in 1996, school boards in 2017, in a country that sees individuals pay $3.50 in taxes for every $1 a corp pays, where banks evaded $41B in taxes in a 5yr period. Thanks for a terrific essay. Public libraries are vital for all the reasons you discuss; I still find a library to be a magical place, as much as when I was a child.

The public library is about more than books. It's about passing down knowledge and tradition to the next generation, even when schools fail us. It is an oasis and a haven. When I was growing up the bookmobile probably saved my life.

I couldn’t agree more. As a former public-school teacher who is changing careers to become an archivist/librarian, I always find it ironic that so many people think libraries are no longer needed. In fact, libraries are needed more than ever!

First, restore proper discipline and good manners, i.e. respect. Then teach pupils to think, not just pass exams for the sake of empty "outcomes".
