Before the “Serena was robbed” crew gets here: Warning #1: Serena’s coach was coaching from the stands. Coach admitted it after game. Warning #2: Serena smashed her racquet. Warning #3: Continued demanding chair umpire apologize to her to on the loudspeaker, called him a “thief”.

To call a coaching violation there was too much from Ramos. Everyone does it. Ramos made it about him. Serena had an off day, Naomi played a superb match.

Umpire was by the book on this occasion. There should be either consistency in enforcement or a rule change. Naomi is so skilled and I can’t wait to see how she keeps growing

#CarlosRomos has never called one on a male player (he worked the @ATPWorldTour) more. He injected himself into this match too much. Serena was having a rough day. He could have let the players play. Serena don’t even call her coach out on tour when it is allowed.

I agree - it was a poor time/place for him to decide to be the ultimate “by the book” chair umpire. Wish Serena could have overcome it - realized that warning was her coaches doing and not hers, and that it didn’t insinuate cheating.

I hope some positives can come out of this. The grand slams, the @WTA and the @ATPWorldTour are going to have to let the players show some emotions. We’re no longer in the Victorian age of tennis. And as a tennis coach, let us coach or leave us in the locker room.

Game is evolving - they’re so stuck on preserving tradition that they aren’t evolving the institution along with the players. Hope to see change come. The game is getting more exciting every year.

The rules do not apply differently to Serena just because she is arguably the greatest female tennis player of all time. Her coach admitted he was coaching. The ref rightfully penalized her and then she went crazy and he penalized her again. All above board. Congrats #osaka!pic.twitter.com/7tNJBXjvmi

Naomi 100% earned her victory. I love Serena but wish she would have contained her anger better. It wasn’t fair to her opponent. Thank God Naomi is poised behind her years.
