Italy's interior minister, who also leads anti-immigrant party the League, has signed up with Steve Bannon to help bring about a populist takeover in the next European Parliamentary elections.https://nyti.ms/2MZDAQT

Disgusting and dangerous. The truth about Italy amd immigration is that it has virtually the lowest number of immigrants in Europe. Italy's problems are a system in Italy totally run by corruption and cronyism little to do with immigration

And you @kenanmalik still think Bannon should be debated with? What a naive column that was. Your kind of liberalism is exploited by extremists. Wake up.

Naivety is imagining that you can stop people being drawn to Bannon-type ideas by ignoring them.

I feel like we’re at a point where they’re drawn to him and others like him whether or not he’s ignored / debated. I mean if people haven’t rejected those ideas at this stage I’ve little faith a debate would change their minds - if anything it’ll help recruit more supporters.

So we should just ignore the 63 million who voted Trump? Say to them ‘You’re racist, you’ll never change your minds, we’ll just put you in the basket of deplorables’? And similarly with all those who might have voted Sweden Democrats today, or have voted for the AfD, the FN, etc?

Maybe I’m too pessimistic but feels like we past the point where ppl drawn to extremes are receptive to reasoned arguments; populism too entrenched. Don’t know the solution but minorities must defend themselves + mainstream must avoid legitimising + normalising extreme voices

There are certainly hardcore racists out there. But your argument seems to misunderstand why people are drawn to populist parties. Something I've written about many times: https://kenanmalik.com/2014/11/05/populism-what-why-how/ … https://kenanmalik.com/2016/11/14/the-faultines-of-the-imagination/ … https://kenanmalik.com/2018/02/04/immigration-and-cultural-loss/ …https://kenanmalik.com/2018/07/02/a-crisis-that-has-little-to-do-with-migration/ …

Bannon is evil. The Italians have to learn, again, what Mussolini’s era showed. That is NOT a Christian message.

Good thing that Italy has elections almost every two years. This “powerful politician” doesn’t last longer than a package of spaghetti. Meanwhile in europe, were still asking our selves what the ... is going on in the US. Please take care of business. The Trump Joke has worn out

NYT start with what it is. Dugganism is what Steve Bannon installs. Putin is a Dugganist. "We're here to deconstruct" -Steve Bannon Italy is strongly fascist now, Bannon has stayed there for months to install this.

Correct assessment of situation. Bannon’s strategy is to deconstruct the country and install his brand of fascism. Italy is very prone to fascism. Can’t explain why
