When expecting my second a nurse asked me if I wanted my placenta. I asked her if I looked like part of the Donner Party. She didn't get it...

@nytimes - as a general rule, it’s impossible not to eat things that are teeming with bacteria. Although this doesn’t mean you should eat placentas. -
She did specify in the text that those were pathogenic bacteria she was referring to
-
that might be true, but people rarely read full articles - most get their data from headlines.
-
True, but most people also don't know that they eat bacteria every time they eat anything

Best not to eat anything that comes out of your body.

What, like breast milk?

"Why might a woman eat her placenta? I asked. Mammals do it, I was told." Some mammals also eat their own poop.

What wasn't addressed in the piece was post-partum depression. Even a perceived improvement in depression, whether placebo or placentophagological, is a great improvement for the mother and family.
-
There is plenty of scientific evidence to refute it as a post-partum despression treatment. No benefits at all.

Not that I’ve ever even thought about eating my placentas (pregnant with child number 3) but do you even know how much bacteria is already in and on our bodies anyway? We aren’t sterile lol.
