There won't be a new "popular" film Oscar next year after all, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced, following a public (and celebrity) outcry.https://nyti.ms/2M6CvRM

It's not being screwed over at all. If it merits an award in a category more than other films it's up against, it'll win said award. "A lot of people liked it" is far from a mark of a movie deserving of an award.

If you want black panther to win an award based on popularity, then based on the popularity metric (people who liked my tweet vs yours), you still lose. 🤔

Serkis would win a MoCap category nearly every year. Just start recognizing MoCap performances as legitimate contenders for the regular Best Acting categories.

I think the public's concern over what awards millionaires want to give or not give each other is at an all-time low.

The academy is so sad. If they can't find a best picture that's popular they're priorities for best picture are really messed up. The last ten years the best picture nobody cared to see it before or after the award was given.

Just because you didn't watch them doesnt mean they weren't seen. I've seen 7 or so of the last 10 winners... It just depends on what kind of movie viewer you are. Casual movie goers dont see very much, and its unsurprising they dont see a lot of the best films each year!

And I think it is surprising they don't see a lot of the best picture winners because I'm saying the idea of beat should mean something. You don't think the academy really thinks the winners are the best movie made each year do you. It's all political inside bullshit.

I couldnt tell you. I cant imagine that every single voter is a hivemind following the same political agenda, and I think people generally pick the movie they thought was the "best" movie that year. People who watch a lot of movies likely wouldnt pick Black Panther, etc.

Not saying Black Panther is bad, but when compared to other movies that came out this year it's just not as high quality in the eyes of the people voting (people who are REALLY into movies).

I understand what you saying. No problem that's cool. Funny thing. I hated black panther. It was so dull. I could barely finish it. Lol.
