In Opinion Op-Ed contributor Allyson Hobbs writes, "The joys of 'just going' that the Beat Generation novelist Jack Kerouac waxed lyrical about in the 1957 classic 'On the Road' were very rarely available to black travelers, regardless of income level."https://nyti.ms/2CbNslt

I remember taking trips from Selma to Minneapolis. I was introduced to The Green Book by a colleague several years ago. Written to share safe places for Black to sleep, and eat on their road trips. Check it out!!!!.

But for those who did, there was The “Green Book”. Fascinating little piece of history. If you’ve never heard of it, Google it.

On this trip through the south in 1951 I remember staying in a African American motor lodge because it was cheap and so were my parents. I'm sure it wasn't as easy as white people had it traveling, but there were some places "on the road" that catered to African Americanspic.twitter.com/GgIEzj7qov

It’s been a while since I’ve read “On the Road,” but I feel like my memory of the few black characters it contains is they they were often portrayed as being trapped by their circumstances—economic, racial, and romantic. Is this an accurate memory?

discrimination in 1951 is this more white guilt i wasn't alive then today it's class warfare more than racism that is hurting all of us actually, after trump it is both that hurts all of us.

How is this “white guilt”? It’s a writer sharing her family’s experience of road trips as a child. If you read it and feel personally guilty this says more about you than the essay. You should read it though, it’s very interesting.

I feel so much anger, sadness and empathy reading this article. I recall reading about Victor Green’s travel book used during the Jim Crow years. It’s unconscionable that even these simple pleasures were fraught with so much peril and pain for our black countrymen. Shame on us.
