Morelia, Mexico saw a significant drop in homicides after reforms partly inspired by community policing efforts in the U.S. Can this model work for the rest of Mexico?https://nyti.ms/2C8qw6x

If they had a solid Second Amendment, like the US, their citizens could arm and protect themselves from pervasive violent drug gangs.

In some places they were granted permission to carry guns to police their towns, unfortunately in some cases those groups were funded by drug cartels from the beginning as a way to keep other cartels, police and the army/marines away so local gangs can "work" undisturbed.

One of the leaders of those groups in Morelia, doctor Mireles, was aprehended due to alleged nexus with drug gangs, later was liberated and given a place in the congress by the new president to grant him immunity. Now he is an outspoken advocate of drug gangs whom he calls heroes

his opinion is that drug cartels benefit society with the money they bring to towns by traficking drugs (give away money), unlike "organized crime", in his opinion is different, even though both are the same. In his words: drug trafickers bring happiness to towns.

Like in the 80s society, police and politicians pact with cartels to allow them to "work", in return cartels distribute money and infrastucture while keeping at bay other cartels(Sinaloa has something similar: narcos are seen as heroes and have movies and songs made). Saludos

I hope so. Mexico 🇲🇽 is such a beautiful country. The citizens are welcoming and warm. You just have to say no gusta trump and I’m from 🇨🇦Canada. Just kidding. I love Mexico and hope policing itself will work out fine. Going to Nogales, Sonora to La Roca for lunch. Yum

You can't work a model if it doesn't exist. (I'm from Morelia, by the way). #México

Now THIS is fake news. Just a paid ad by the office that's about to leave. For starters, the police force went into strike just this weekend because the administration has not paid them in months. This "article" is so irresponsible.

Morelia, such a gorgeous city. The bad thing it's that it's almost sure that this will be over when the disgusting winners of the election begins their period.
