"I really, really, really, really need to get her to a hospital A.S.A.P," he said about his wife. The call-taker told him brusquely that there were thousands of calls for service in the area.https://nyti.ms/2PnVdqp

A devastating story. There has to be some way to make the system more efficient in getting help where its needed. 😞

And to think, as bad as THIS story is, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 was undoubtedly exponentially worse. 😰😰. NO American citizen should have to die like these people. 😡😡

Whats infuriating is that there Were multiple chances of resuce that didnt get there. By the time they did it was too late. And yes, i too was thinking about Puerto Rico while reading this and how much the death toll has risen... :-/

Agreed!! Yet, it seems, we learn NOTHING and seriously lack any sense of improvement on the response of each storm after these catastrophes. WHY?!?!

It... just makes me feel pretty helpless tbh. And its storm season again. I just hope these stories can help in some way. That maybe a 911 operator will hear a call just a bit differently. That we will put better systems in place. I have to hope

@sherifink I don't know how you manage to write these exceptional articles w such empathy and clarity. I read Five Days At Memorial and now Wayne and Casey Dailey. 💔 Did we learn nothing from Katrina, 12 yrs ltr? We have neither th vision or political will to fix this. 😥

This call-taker needs to be reported for rudeness & bad customer service. Could be putting lives in danger.

Under ordinary circumstances, I would absolutely agree, but this was far beyond that. Some people can’t handle that sort of stress. Even people who can handle that level of stress get overwhelmed. What happened was an abject failure of an incredibly overburdened system.

This is what happens w/ healthcare for all. Those in extreme need get pushed aside. I had a friend in Canada who I knew had a brain tumor... the drs denied it for 3 years. She’s alive bcs I called it out w/o a med license. IJS... -Muninn
