He gave a stranded couple his last $20. They used his story to raise $400,000 through GoFundMe. He claims he never saw any money. Now he has a lawyer.https://nyti.ms/2Pi2oQF

I worked in a legal office where we had numerous Trust accounts set up for individuals who could get a set amount every month or money for special needs approved by one of our attorneys. This is a total scam.

By whom? The homeless man or the couple?Because if the couple wanted to do right, they would have set up a trust account like that for him instead of them being in charge of the money and now being accused of stealing it.

There are ways around this through third parties, if that is their concern. As it stands, they are just making up preconditions for him not to receive it. They should have set up a trust, as someone has said up thread

So much more to this story than a homeless guy getting screwed out of his cash. End result will only be the distrust of feel good campaigns such as this. Should have hired a 3rd party money manager.

It’s ashamed if that truly happened. That’s why you really never know to whom to donate. So many crooks out there! The story sounded great when I first read about it.

The couple has refused to provide an accounting of how money was spent and how much is left. Looks like they got greedy. Nearly half a million dollars can corrupt even well-intentioned people.

What they did was fraud. It is awful that people send money believing this man would get it and the couple won't give it to him now. Hopefully they lose it and he wins and they see jail time.
