Thanks for reporting on this, but this strike was announced well in advance and started last Tuesday so why did this take so long for you to write?

Finally the NYTimes decides to cover this. What a great newspaper being run to the ground because they're too cowardly to report the stuff that matters to the 99%

While it's nice you're finally covering this, it's very telling that this reads like a high school news paper and not a national paper that could have actually invested into the proper investigative reporting this deserves.

Big job to change the prison system but certainly it can be more humane in detention.

Everything at prisons cost more because most of the folks that live there are not trustworthy. Perhaps they can speak with their family members that if they want good money then jobs, work hard legally, go to school. No crimes. Could be the mantra?

"According to the Vera Institute of Justice, incarceration costs an average of more than $31,000 per inmate, per year, nationwide. In some states, it's as much as $60,000. May 19, 2017" Multiply that by 4,000 per institution. Maybe convince family & friends not to join them?

Go ahead and strike. We prefer you go on a hunger strike until your sentence is over. If still alive, obey the law and you won't need to go on strike.
