High tension, raw emotion and occasional violence have always been a feature of American democracy. But there’s something different about what we’re living through now, according to interviews with voters and research by political scientists.https://nyti.ms/2nN6o00

In one case, a mother in New England sought the help of professional conflict mediators during the holidays because her 2 daughters — one who was pro-Trump, the other anti-Trump — had stopped speaking to each other.http://nyti.ms/2nN6o00

In Georgia, a couple married 23 years had always had mild disagreements over politics. It's different now. “The Bushes were hard years,” said Maryann Meador, whose husband is a Trump supporter. “But we really didn’t get into screaming matches about it.”http://nyti.ms/2nN6o00

When her husband drinks coffee from a cup with “Make America Great Again” on it and leaves it on the counter, she is tempted to smash it. “But what would that accomplish?” she asked.http://nyti.ms/2nN6o00

Partisan identification is now a bigger wedge between Americans than race, gender, religion or level of education. 35% of Democrats, a Pew survey last year found, said learning that a friend had voted for Trump would put a strain on their relationship.http://nyti.ms/2nN6o00

Apart from those voters who sided with Trump, there were lots others who supported him but were reluctant to admit that, which messed up the exit poll pundits predictions later during 2016. This silent group is what everyone should be apprehensive about

I guess @nytimes is more concerned with peoples feelings than #facts, or real #journalism. I would suggest being careful riding this wave because at some point you will lose whatever credibility you have left.

I have been shocked to watch with horror as many of my friends have become toxic toward anyone who didn't vote the way that they did. The "moral indignation" seems to have blinded them to their once healthy relationships with people who didn't think exactly like them. #walkaway

To me, it’s a modern day civil war that the President wants. Lincoln worked to bring the country together. Trump does the opposite. It’s getting worse as he gets more desperate.

We support the CIA, FBI, NSA and other intelligence agencies. They are the only ones besides Hillary and @maddow who aren't Russian dupes or agents. CIA needs to organize a coup in USA and install our rightful queen, Hillary Clinton. #TheResistance #ImWithHer

I’ve lost friends of decades as they’ve revealed their true nature and I cannot ignore the bigotry. I have coworkers I cannot speak to as they’ve become unhinged, venting like lunatics, spewing FoxNews-Trump propaganda. I’m better off avoiding MAGAs for sanity’s sake.

I have begun to lose hope. I now see that “it CAN happen here!” The safety and freedom that I’ve always lived with and taken for granted, really can be lost. I am scared for my children’s futures.
