For years, fish sellers in China have labeled rainbow trout as salmon. The government's response? Fine by us.https://nyti.ms/2BfK5tf

Chinese people produce fake stuff because Chinese government shamelessly produce fake stuff all the time. There is one saying “in China, everything is fake but crook!😎”

Scientifically, there is no difference between salmon and trout. They both come from the salmonidae family, and oceanic salmon have evolved into freshwater trout species and back into salmon many times.

With salmon being so common and much cheaper these days I see no value in faking it with trout. The trout could be a seller in itself with honest marketing.
