Flaws both in design and in maintenance are suspected in the collapse of a bridge in Genoa, Italy this week, killing at least 38.https://nyti.ms/2PgcEJU

It stood for over 40 years, so design doesn't seem to have been the issue here.

Not true. Structural design, materials and idea of 50 years ago were planned for 50 years. There were plans to close it for another route. Shitty populist movement (at gov now) against everything from trains to vax, was against the new way. “It can stand 100y!” Now hiding tracks

The men with their feet on the ground represent the trestle-like pylons, one of which collapsed together with two men like the one on the suspended chair. The reinforced concrete surrounding the stay cables was intended to protect the tendons from corrosion.pic.twitter.com/W9tXpO2rHp

Notwithstanding the fact that we maintain a 737 bridge inventory of the very highest standards, all the possible factors at play in the Italian incident have to be duly considered inclusive of design, of course.

Good sense in this article about the #GenoaBridge. Regarding maintenance of aeroplanes, these generally get thrown away after less than 50 years. That option tends to be overruled for infrastructure, generally because of politics.
